Male Mentors Needed

There is a desperate need for adult male mentors to work with male children and teens in our community.

This was the message heard at the Franklin Youth Initiative's January 31st meeting of the Faith-based committee. Shawn Dove, Youth Ministry Director of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, reported that while the new mentoring program underway at the church has been getting some responses from adults willing to be trained to become mentors, eighty percent of the volunteers are female. Rebecca Kreibel, of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, echoed this as well, when she told the audience that they always have waiting lists for "big brothers" to become mentors to "little brothers".

If anyone would like more information about how to become a mentor, information is available by contacting Shawn Dove at 732-828-2009 or Rebecca Kriebel at 908-730-7773. Websites that may be visited regarding mentoring are www.mentorforbbbs.org or www.mentoring.org. The Franklin Youth Initiative's Faith-based committee will continue to explore ways in which members of all houses of worship may actively support youth through the provision of positive relationships with caring adults or by sharing resources about safe and fun alternative activities for young people. Please call 732-873-1991 if you want more information about the Franklin Youth Initiative.
